![]() In response, Bell proposed the UH-1B, equipped with the Lycoming T53-L-5 engine producing 960 shp (720 kW) and a longer cabin that could accommodate either seven passengers or four stretchers and a medical attendant. The Army indicated the need for improved follow-on models even as the first UH-1As were being delivered. While glowing in praise for the helicopter's advances over piston-engined helicopters, the Army reports from the service tests of the YH-40 found it to be underpowered with the production T53-L-1A powerplant producing a maximum continuous 770 shaft horsepower (570 kilowatts). Even after September 1962, at which point the designation for all models was changed to UH-1 under a unified Department of Defense (DOD) designation system, yet the nickname persisted. Army name was almost never used in practice. The reference became so popular that Bell began casting the name on the helicopter's anti-torque pedals. The helicopter quickly developed a nickname derived from its HU-1 designation, which came to be pronounced as "Huey". In March 1960, the Army awarded Bell a production contract for 100 aircraft, which was designated "HU-1A" and officially named Iroquois after the Native American nations. During 1957, a further two prototypes were completed. Even prior to the first flight, the Army had placed an order for six YH-40 service test helicopters. Powered by a prototype Lycoming YT53-L-1 (LTC1B-1) engine producing 700 shp (520 kW), the XH-40 first flew on 20 October 1956, at Fort Worth, Texas, with Bell's chief test pilot, Floyd Carlson, at the controls. In excess of 16,000 Iroquois have been built since 1960. In US Army service, the Iroquois was gradually phased out following the introduction of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk and the Eurocopter UH-72 Lakota, although hundreds were still in use more than 50 years following the type's introduction. In response to demands from some customers, a twin-engined model, the UH-1N Twin Huey, was also developed during the late 1960s a four-bladed derivative, the Bell UH-1Y Venom, was also developed during the early twenty-first century. The Bell 204 and 205 are Iroquois versions developed for the civilian market. ![]() ![]() A dedicated attack helicopter, the Bell AH-1 Cobra, was derived from the UH-1, and retained a high degree of commonality. Various derivatives and developments of the Iroquois were produced. The Iroquois was originally designated HU-1, hence the Huey nickname, which has remained in common use, despite the official redesignation to UH-1 in 1962. ![]() Various other conflicts have seen combat deployments of the Iroquois, such as the Rhodesian Bush War, Falklands War, War in Afghanistan, and the 2007 Lebanon conflict. In total, around 7,000 Iroquois were deployed in the Vietnam theatre, over 3,300 of which were believed to be destroyed. Other nations' armed air services, such as the Royal Australian Air Force, also dispatched their own Iroquois to Vietnam. The United States Air Force also deployed its Iroquois to Vietnam, using them to conduct reconnaissance operations, psychological warfare, and other support roles. Armed Iroquois gunships carried a variety of weapons, including rockets, grenade launchers, and machine guns, and were often modified in the field to suit specific operations. It was used for various purposes, conducting general support, air assault, cargo transport, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, electronic warfare, and ground attack missions. The Iroquois was first used in combat operations during the Vietnam War, the first examples being deployed in March 1962. Further modifications would include the use of all-aluminium construction, the adoption of a rotor brake, and alternative powerplants. A stretched version of the Iroquois, first flown during August 1961, was also produced in response to Army demands for a version than could accommodate more troops. In response to criticisms over the rotorcraft's power, Bell quickly developed multiple models furnished with more powerful engines in comparison to the prototype's Lycoming YT53-L-1 (LTC1B-1) engine, producing 700 shp (520 kW), by 1966, the Lycoming T53-L-13, capable of 1,400 shp (1,000 kW), was being installed on some models. An initial production contract for 100 HU-1As was issued in March 1960. The Bell 204, first flown on 20 October 1956, was warmly received, particularly for the performance of its single turboshaft engine over piston engine-powered counterparts. ![]() It is the first member of the prolific Huey family, as well as the first turbine-powered helicopter in service with the United States military.ĭevelopment of the Iroquois started in the early 1950s, a major impetus being a requirement issued by the United States Army for a new medical evacuation and utility helicopter. The Bell UH-1 Iroquois (nicknamed " Huey") is a utility military helicopter designed and produced by the American aerospace company Bell Helicopter. ![]()

The tread pattern of the Chupacabra sits somewhere between a Bontrager XR2 and XR3 which we found struck an excellent balance between rolling efficiency, sidewall stability and traction. Check out the scraping above the Bontrager logo- that’s some sturdy sidewall protection! We know this because with a 3” tyre you’ll be scraping the sidewalls of the tyre against lots of stuff on the trail, but despite this, the Chupacabra remained intact throughout the review. The result of the project was the Bontrager Chupacabra, a 3” tyre that weighs just 860 grams! Despite the light weight, the Chupacabra is tubeless ready, and the sidewall protection was high. We were lucky to chat with Trek’s Travis Brown where we discussed the Stache, and he summed up the decision to go with 29+ wheels by saying ‘if you’re the type of rider willing to take a small weight penalty for a lot of extra control and traction, and the ability to run low pressures, we came out with the 29+ to be superior.’Ģ9+ wheels with 3” tyres must be heavy right?Īt first glance, you would presume that the Bontrager Chupacabra tyres would weigh significantly more than regular tyres, however, one of the key aims of the Stache project (which was entitled ‘project weird’) was to create a lightweight 29×3.00 tyre. While the Stache is never going to feel like a dual suspension bike in choppy terrain, setting up the monstrous Chupacabra tyres tubeless and with the pressures low the bike has excellent small bump compliance. ![]() The second advantage of 29+ tyres is the small bump sensitivity that can be achieved by running the voluminous tyres at lower pressures. Firstly, with a bigger contact patch you’ve got more grip on the ground in virtually any condition than a goanna scaling a tree. There have only ever been one other 29+ bike make its way to the masses, we reviewed the Surly Krampus a few years ago, while we loved its endless traction it was hard work to manoeuvre through any form of a tight corner and was a boat to try and rip through singletrack.Īn increased contact patch is beneficial in two main ways. ![]() 29+ wheels are huge, too big to fit into a normal shaped frame, hence the wildly asymmetrical rear end of the bike and its elevated chainstay arrangement. ![]() Not sure what we are talking about? Here, have a read of this if you’d like to know what a plus-size bike is all about.Įssentially, Trek developed the Stache around 29+ wheels due to the increased contact patch of the tyre when compared to 27.5+, but it wasn’t going to be so simple. When Trek decided to create a bike in the ‘plus hardtail’ category, they developed the Stache from the ground up using 29″ diameter wheels, instead of jumping on the existing 27.5+ wheel (27.5″ diameter with 2.8-3″ tyres) size bandwagon. The Trek Stache, with its big, balloon-like wheels. Expensive for a hardtail with mid-range spec. ![]() ![]() ![]() “It took about 10 days to cut everything and stick everything on from scratch.” For things like the white panels and all the little logos and chevrons on the frame I just went to work and vinyl'd everything up from scratch. “As an example, the 1994 Eddy Merckx Motorola bikes – we got them sprayed in a simple blue to red fade, front to back, and then I’ve got a little desk top vinyl cutting machine. Given that a large section of the film's audience will be cyclists – well known for their fastidious attention to kit detail – Spurrier knew the pressure was on. The project used up Condor’s entire stock of steel-tubed Classico framesets which were sent off to be painted before the intricate job of fixing decals to the frame. “Initially the producers wanted an entire peloton’s worth of vintage bikes between about 19, However the best thing we could think of was just simply to replicate the bikes as best as possible because we had three weeks in which to do the whole lot,” added Spurrier. “A lot of it was of an era when we were just getting into cycling ourselves so we were trawling through images like Miguel Indurain riding his bike,” he said. ![]() “It was a fabulous project,” Spurrier told BikeRadar yesterday. It's not well-made enough to be worth doing anything with. Without the electronics it's just another guitar, although without pickups. I sold the first parts guitar for scrap, and I'll probably do the same with the second. When it fails completely I'll put some Ghost or PMC piezos in the saddle and use it as a regular guitar because it plays so well. About three years ago I bought another one for backup, but that has now become a parts guitar also, and now my primary Variax is failing again. That later became a parts guitar when the original failed and parts were no longer available. A few years later I bought another one off eBay as a backup. I bought one when they first came out and did a lot of work on it getting it set up perfectly. However, as much as I love mine I would not recommend buying one. Here's ruff clips of "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" using "obsolete" Variax for both acoustic tracks: I think people owe it to themselves to find out if Variax is right for them? Any good working Variax is a good Variax, IMO. Check completed eBay listings for similar guitars and keep purchase price around those numbers and somebody will always want that guitar if you ultimately don’t care for it? Just don’t get carried away with price. The Acoustic 700 behaves slightly better with the wrapped 3rd (G) string than compared to the electric body acoustic models that usually use plain 3rd string.īut the bottom line here is that you’re not likely to lose much, if any, money buying a good working used Variax. Closed can headphones or IEM buds can isolate that pretty well but it’s something to note. When using digital tunings “acoustic†ambient sound bleeding into your ears can make for some funny sounds in your head. One minor con about acoustic Variax IMO is that they have more acoustic volume than the electric body guitars. I’m lucky to have many wonderful acoustic guitars but I can’t get close to the mic sound of Variax acoustic models at my recording locations. In fact, majority say something glowing about my acoustic guitar tracks. I frequently cut acoustic guitar tracks and very talented pros don’t notice they originate from Variax digital source. Obviously, recording is another great application. Only thing is, you don’t risk feedback or excessive microphonic’s on live gigs. The old days of using a Barcus Berry type piezo or sound hole acoustic guitar pickup into an electric guitar amp doesn’t really cut it with Variax acoustic model sounds.Īcoustic models seems to be created/captured/sampled as microphone recordings so I treat the sound much like a post-preamp microphone signal. I think people use the term FRFR (full range full response)? Basically, DI the mixer/house, acoustic amp, keyboard amp, etc. If you’re getting back into playing out live remember that Variax acoustic models across all versions need Full Range amplification to sound right. If setup playability can be made right and the electronics work to spec, acoustic 700 is a helluva value, IMO. I find a lot of value in the older Variax models. ![]() ![]() With this new island battleground, there is something to enjoy no matter your style of gameplay.Įxodus FlotillaThe expedition to Oshur took place aboard the new Exodus-class Fleet Carriers. Some of you might say "well who cares.I only play Planetside 2. The goal would be to let you pick an item in each game you play. That's a benefit most companies simply can't offer because they don't have our portfolio of games. We are considering (and are likely going to move forward with) a plan that means if you subscribe to one of our games you are a subscriber to all our games (this applies to PC titles only btw). It's a pain in the neck to deal with this. So when we have a 3x sale on SC we have to do something different for our console titles. We're a lot more limited because we can't use Station Cash on there. We can't do the same kind of promotions as easily on the PS3 and PS4.
